TAX DEADLINES
Income tax filing deadlines
Don't wait until the last minute to start prepping for tax season. Consider this your official filing cheat sheet.
Employers
March 2, 2026
The T4 filing deadline for the 2025 tax year is Monday, March 2, 2026. Employers must submit T4 slips and the summary to the CRA and send them to employees by this date because February 28, 2026, falls on a Saturday.
Employed individuals
April 30, 2026
The tax-filing deadline for most individuals is April 30th. BUT, if you are self employed, you get a filing extension…
Sole proprietorships and partnerships
June 15, 2026
If either you, your spouse or common law-partner are self-employed, you have until June 15 to file your return.
Generally speaking, anyone who runs an unincorporated business in Canada is considered a sole proprietor or partner by the CRA, and needs to file a T2125.
Important: the extension only applies to filing, any balance owing is still due April 30th whether or not you have self employment.
Penalty for late filing
If you owe tax and file late, the CRA charges 5% of your 2025 balance owing, plus 1% for each full month it is late, up to 12 months.
The CRA suggests filing early, and electronically, to avoid processing delays.

Income tax payment deadline
The payment deadline is April 30, 2026
If you have an income tax balance owing, payment is due by April 30.
If you, your spouse or common law-partner are self-employed, the deadline for paying any taxes owed remains April 30, but you have until June 15th to file the tax returns. This extended deadline acknowledges the additional complexity often involved in self-employed tax filings, such as calculating business expenses and potentially variable income.
Consequences of Missing the Tax Deadline
Missing the April 30 payment deadline will result in penalties and interest that can add up quickly.

The rate applying to most non-refundable tax credits will continue to be the same as the lowest marginal individual income tax rate.

The federal fuel charge ended April 1, 2025. As a result, the return of fuel charge proceeds to farmers tax credit for the 2024-2025 fuel charge year will be the final credit available to certain eligible farming businesses. For more information, see Line 47556 – Return of fuel charge proceeds to farmers tax credit.

Under proposed changes, a new non-refundable tax credit was introduced to effectively maintain a 15% rate for certain non-refundable tax credits claimed on amounts over the first income tax bracket threshold of $57,375 for 2025.
